Clubs & Organizations
Galileo offers a variety of clubs supported by the school to meet student interests. These range from language and theatre organizations to environmental and honorary societies. Most clubs provide hands-on opportunities for students to explore their interests and career choices. Through organizations, students log hundreds of service hours in the community, meeting one of the Areas of Interaction requirements for the IB Programmes.
Art Club - The Art Club is a creative space for students who are passionate about exploring various forms of visual arts. Whether you’re an experienced artist or just starting out, Art Club welcomes all skill levels to come together and express their creativity. Art Club is a supportive environment where creativity, collaboration, and artistic growth thrive. Join us to discover new skills, share your ideas, and make art in a fun and inspiring atmosphere! BETA Club - The National Beta Club is an academic honor society that promotes the ideals of leadership, character, service, and academic achievement. Our club is dedicated to recognizing high-performing students while providing opportunities for personal growth and development through community service projects, leadership activities, and academic challenges. As members, students are encouraged to lead by example, participate in volunteer efforts, and make a positive impact on both their school and community. The National Beta Club helps foster a culture of excellence, responsibility, and service, preparing students to be well-rounded individuals and future leaders. Chess and Gaming Club - Gaming Club is a place for students who enjoy games of all types including board games (especially chess), card games, and video games to spend some time playing games together after school. FBLA - The Galileo High School FBLA chapter is a dynamic, student-led organization that prepares members for success in business, leadership, and life. Through competitive events, community service, and professional development, students build essential skills in communication, entrepreneurship, management, and teamwork. Members take initiative in organizing projects, attending leadership conferences, and networking with peers and professionals. FBLA empowers Galileo students to think critically, lead confidently, and make a positive impact in their school and community as the next generation of business innovators. Glee Club - The Galileo High School Glee Club is a vibrant, student-led organization built on leadership, creativity, and a shared love of music. Our members take pride in collaborating to plan performances, select songs, and choreograph routines that showcase our school’s spirit and talent. Through singing and dancing, we celebrate teamwork, self-expression, and community. Whether performing classic hits or modern favorites, the Glee Club brings energy, harmony, and joy to every stage. Global Explorers Club - The mission of Global Explorers is to bring the world to our school by learning about diverse cultures, traditions, and perspectives. Through monthly themes, food tastings, films, guest speakers, and cultural activities, members will explore the richness of global diversity and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. Global Explorers celebrates connection, curiosity, and appreciation for cultures beyond our own. See Ms. Guzman for more information.
Quiz Bowl - Quiz Bowl is a Virginia High School League (VHSL) sponsored academic activity in which students compete as part of team setting against other schools. Quiz Bowl tests student knowledge of all key academic areas in high school (Literature, History, Mathematics, Science, Geography, Arts, and Music) along with current events and pop culture. Students compete in 3-rounds to designate a quiz bowl match. Rounds 1 and 3 are composed as toss-up questions (think Jeopardy) while the second round allows for teams to communicate together to answer questions and also engages students in their ability to solve computational math. At the end of the 3 rounds, the team with the highest score wins. See Mr. Smith for more information.
POP - Progression Over Perfection (P.O.P.) began in October of 2021, initially providing a space for students to practice self-care and mental health awareness. Now, P.O.P is more than just a safe space for students. It is an after school club where people can be themselves and feel safe, while also learning about and discussing sensitive but important topics. Our mission statement is to educate and to expand knowledge of ourselves and others. To encourage those around us to stand up for what’s right. P.O.P. has a focus on community, support, commitment, growth, safety, education, and respect. See Ms. E. Larking or Ms. French for more information.
SCA - The Galileo High School Student Council is a dedicated, student-led leadership organization that represents the voice of our student body. Our members work together to promote school spirit, plan events, and encourage positive change within the school community. Through teamwork, communication, and service, we strive to make Galileo a welcoming and engaging environment for all students. The Student Council develops leadership skills, fosters responsibility, and empowers students to take an active role in shaping the culture and future of our school. Spanish Club - Spanish club offers a variety of activities and experiences to help students learn about Spanish culture and language, and to develop other skills: Practice Spanish, Learn about Spanish culture, Volunteer, and to Make friends. Spanish club is open to anyone who wants to learn about Spanish culture and language, not just students who are taking Spanish class or are Hispanic. See Mrs. Kinnett for more information.
Speech - Formed in 2013, the Galileo Speech Team competes in the VHSL Speech competitions and holds a very successful record. We have won multiple awards at the state finals each year since 2017, and our students have been qualifying for the state finals since 2015. Speech is divided into ten events: Original Oratory, Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, Storytelling, Poetry Interpretation, Prose Interpretation, Serious Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Serious Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Humorous Dramatic Interpretation. Theatre Guild - The Galileo Theatre Guild began in 2003 to give our students a chance to experience the wonder of live performance. Since that time, our program has expanded to include a yearly entry into the VHSL One Act Theatre competition, a full-length spring play, a Student Playwriting Showcase (from which all proceeds are donate to charity), and entries into the VHSL Film Festival competition.
Students interested in performing or working in backstage capacities are welcome. Students who join the Theatre Guild are encouraged to take part in the Speech Team as well. Tickets are $5. See Mr. Weyler for more information.
